The Best of NAMM 2011

For those of you who have never heard of or attended the NAMM Show, it is an event where music manufacturers from around the world unveil their latest products, fans meet rock stars, and dealers make deals. It is the ultimate event for music technology fans, as well as anyone interested in music making. We have been attending the event as part of the Korg USA contingent for the past decade. This year, we are proud to present some of our favorite products for music educators from the show. Here is what we’ve come up with (in alphabetical order):

Alesis SynthStation 49

iPads were everywhere at the NAMM Show this year, and we think that the new SynthStation 49 from Alesis was a very exciting product. As you can see from the picture, you dock your iPad into the keyboard controller, and away you go. We don’t know all of the details on the functionality of the apps that will work with the SynthStation 49, but we imagine sequencer style workstation apps working very nicely with this machine. The introductory price is targeted at $199 and it should be available by this upcoming May. Of course, SoundTree will be stocking them as soon as they are available.

Alesis VideoTrack

While this product has been out for a while, this was our first time getting an up close and personal look at this fantastic product from Alesis. Unlike other inexpensive handheld video recorders out there on the market, the VideoTrack has high quality condenser microphones that make superior audio recordings. Simply point and shoot then hook up to your computer via USB to make great videos of your performances. At $179, the Alesis VideoTrack is a great buy.

IK Multimedia iRig Mic, iKlip & iRig

Getting back to the iPad theme, IK Multimedia has come out with three fantastic new products to make your iPad truly integrated into the music making process. The new iKlip simply attaches your iPad securely to a microphone or music stand. The iRig Mic is a dynamic microphone that you can attach directly to your iPad for recording vocals or anything else. The iRig has been out for a while now, and paired with AmpliTube (their amazing iPad amplifier modeling app) you can hook your guitar up to your iPad and sound amazing. Pricing on the iKlip should be around $39. The iRig Mic has no price yet, and the iRig is $39.99. We’ll be stocking all of these very soon.

JamHub

For us, one of the biggest hits of the show was the amazing line of products from JamHub. The devices allow you to create silent rock band rehearsal environments with each player having control over the mix of instruments. The SoundTree staff had fun playing in their mini rehearsal studio, and the idea of getting rock bands into the school music curriculum really solidified after checking out these fantastic products. Check out www.jamhub.com for more information. SoundTree will be getting the entire line in stock in the next few weeks.

Korg Kronos

The biggest hit of the show, in our humble opinion, was the new game changing keyboard workstation from Korg, the Kronos. There were crowds ten deep to see each demonstration of this amazing new flagship keyboard. It is difficult to describe just how amazing this keyboard is. Better for you to check out this video:

Korg Kronos

As soon as this keyboard is in stock, we will have it available to all of our teacher and students friends.

Korg Nano 2 Series

We’ve sold a ton of the original Korg nano series to teachers and students looking for the ultimate portable USB controllers, and now Korg has upped the game with the nano 2 series. More robust, more controls, and a better feeling keyboard are some of the new features that you’ll find. They should be coming in toward the end of the Spring, and we’ll let you know the minute we get them.

Using ProTools in Music Education

That’s right. Our very own SoundTree Mid-Atlantic Accounts Manager Robin Hodson, has written a fantastic book on how to teach music with ProTools, and his book has won a coveted NAMM Best Tools for Schools Award. We are very proud of his work and we know that this new resource will be on the desks of any music educator who teaches with ProTools. SoundTree is proud to stock this resource on our webstore, and we know it will be a best seller!

Zoom Q3HD

A great new product from Zoom, the company that brings you the H1, H2 & H4N handheld audio recorders, is the Q3HD – a handheld HD video recorder for only $299. It’s been out a little while already and is doing phenomenally well. We will be getting these great machines in stock soon. Amazing quality of video and audio recording at an amazing price. What more can you ask for?

Did you go to NAMM 2011? Are there products that you saw that you’d like to mention? Please comment below. We’d love to hear form you.

Until next time…

Two New Must-Have iPad Music Apps from Korg

For all of you iPad owners/users out there, by now you have probably heard of the two amazing iPad apps from KorgiElectribe and the iMS-20. These two apps are among the highest rated music making apps on the Apple Store, and it is no surprise considering what you get when you purchase them. Unlike any other hardware manufacturer, Korg is releasing apps that are truly as close to the hardware devices that they emulate as you can get. I have purchased both for my own personal iPad, and have not been able to put them down. The iElectribe is every bit as good as the amazing hardware device from Korg. All of the original presets are there, it is very intuitive to navigate, and it sounds amazing. All you need to do is plug this thing into an amplifier and you are ready to go. The iMS-20 goes one or two steps further than the classic MS-20. Similar to the popular Korg DS-10, the iMS-20 includes the amazing Korg Kaoss pad controllers, and a pattern sequencer. You can really make some amazing sounds and songs with it.

Not surprisingly, there are already tons of how-to videos on YouTube. We have included two of them below. If you are a musician and an iPad owner, you must download these apps today. After viewing these videos, we are sure that you will.

Already own these apps? What do you think of them? We’d love to hear from you.

SoundTree @ NCMEA 2010

This past weekend and today, SoundTree has been at the NCMEA 2010 Conference in Winston Salem, NC. Like we do for many of the shows we attend, we brought along our portable music technology lab, complete with computers, USB keyboard controllers, headphones, and tons of software for music educators to take for a test drive. SoundTree Managing Director Jim Frankel and Mid-Atlantic Accounts Manager Robin Hodson presented sessions at the show, and all of their handouts and materials can be accessed through www.soundtree.com/ncmea10. We look forward to future events in North Carolina!

Anyone Can Make Music with Soundbeam – 2010 Tour Registration

Sponsored by the Technology Institute for Music Educators (TI:ME) www.ti-me.org

SoundTree, Soundbeam UK, and TI:ME invite you to join us at one of our FREE* one-day Soundbeam workshops offered in the northeast US. Our workshops are designed for music educators and therapists who are interested in exploring how the Soundbeam system provides a medium through which even profoundly physically disabled or learning impaired individuals can become expressive and communicative using music and sound.

For folks who are new to the Soundbeam system, the workshop offers a wonderful opportunity to learn how the Soundbeam can be used in your own classrooms or therapy sessions. For current owners of the Soundbeam system, this workshop offers a chance to sharpen your Soundbeam skills.

The morning session of each workshop is Working with the Soundbeam 5. This session will include an introduction to what the Soundbeam is and how it works, and provide a working knowledge of how to navigate and use the system. The afternoon session of each workshop is Pracitcal Applications of the Soundbeam 5. This session will cover case studies and examples of the Soundbeam being used as a therapy device and used in the general music classroom.

To register for a Soundbeam workshop, simply click on this link. Act 48 continuing education credit hours available for Pennsylvania educators – be sure to include your PA DOE Professional Personal ID below.

*All Soundbeam workshops are free EXCEPT for Friday, November 12th at The Penn Stater Hotel. The Penn State workshop will cost $20 and includes a full lunch buffet and coffee/snack breaks during the workshop. Payment details for The Penn Stater workshop will be sent via email upon registration.

METOS 2010 – A Huge Success!

One week ago, SoundTree hosted the first ever completely online, live conference on music technology. Over 300 people attended 20 sessions, presented by some of the best clinicians in the field. For many attendees, this was the first time they had attended a webinar. While there were some technical glitches for a few, the vast majority were able to participate in a truly interactive event.

Each of the “rooms” where presentations were held had live bloggers hosting backchannel discussions about what was being covered in the sessions. Transcripts of these discussions can be found by visiting http://www.thomasjwestmusic.com/metosonlinesummit.htm. In addition to this coverage, all of the sessions were recorded and will be available by November 1st on the METOS 2010 homepage. To access these recordings, you will need to click on the session title in the schedule, and the recording will come up for viewing.

Immediately following the event, a survey was sent out to all registrants to garner feedback on the event. There has been a terrific response, and we plan on implementing some of the suggestions and addressing the handful of criticisms to make our next online conference opportunity even better. Thank you all who participated in METOS 2010. We were certainly pleased with the end result and we are already planning a similar event in February of 2011. Stay tuned for more information.

METOS 2010 – Live Coverage

As you may be aware, the METOS 2010 Conference is quickly approaching. This Monday, October 11th, SoundTree will be hosting the first ever completely online, live music technology conference. If you have not yet registered, please do so as soon as possible. Registration closes tomorrow, October 8th at 10am EDT.

As part of the event, four music technology bloggers will be covering the event live and will be hosting the “backchannel” for the event. For those of you unfamiliar with the term, backchannel is basically a stream of comments about what is going on in each session that anyone can add their thoughts to. In a way, it’s a bit like passing notes during class except everyone gets to see them. PA Music educator and avid blogger Tom West, has written a post that includes all of the information that you need to participate in this aspect of the event. Additionally, if you are on Twitter, you can add the hashtag #metos2010 to your posts to join the conversation.

Each room for the METOS 2010 Conference is being hosted by the following music education bloggers:

SoundTree Room: Andy Zweibl http://musicedmajor.net/metos10

ATMI Room: Justine Dolorfino http://education-sms.net/portfolio/metos-2010-atmi-room-landing-page/

MENC Room: Tom West http://thomasjwestmusic.com/metosonlinesummit.htm

TI:ME Room: Andy Ritenour http://futuremusiceducators.net/metos2010

All of the posts and comments generated during the event will be archived on those sites, and recordings of each session will be available on the METOS 2010 Conference page by November 1st.

It is our sincere hope that METOS becomes an annual event, and that music educators from around the world join in the conversation to help them effectively integrate music technology into their curricula. See you on the 11th!

CMS/ATMI 2010 National Conference

Once again, SoundTree will be out in full force at the upcoming CMS/ATMI National Conference this week in Minneapolis, MN. SoundTree is hosting the hands-on technology lab in Ballroom 1 and sponsoring the CMS Technology Pre-Conference on Wednesday.

In addition, SoundTree is sponsoring three sessions: Panel Discussion on 21st Century Music Technology Labs: Where Are We Headed? presented by Dr. Jim Frankel on Fri. Sept. 24th at 10am in Ballroom 1; Mobile Solutions for Music Technology Labs presented by Dr. Jay Dorfman on Fri. Sept. 24th at 1pm in Ballroom 1 and The New Look of Finale 2011 presented by Dr. Tom Rudolph on Sat. Sept. 25th at 4pm in Ballroom 1.

We have created a special landing page for the event where all session materials as well as relevant links are posted. Podcasts of our sessions will be posted there after the event. We hope to see you there!
